In this interview, she reflects on her career, challenges, advice for women entering the field and her inspirations. Join us as we explore Michelle's impactful journey and the lessons it offers for aspiring women in procurement.
What inspired you to pursue a career in procurement?
My journey into procurement was serendipitous, driven by a career transition and an opportunity to work in supplier diversity that was presented to me. What started as a temporary role evolved into a passionate career, driven by the impact of promoting diversity and sustainability in the business world. I am particularly drawn to the role's potential for creating inclusive economic opportunities and fostering organizational change.
Can you share a challenge you've faced in your career and how you overcame it?
The biggest challenge I've faced is myself. Overcoming this involved embracing vulnerability, asking questions, and acknowledging my strengths and limitations. It's about balancing confidence and humility, continuously learning, and seeking collaboration rather than confrontation. This mindset has helped me navigate my career and personal growth effectively.
What advice do you have for young women aspiring to succeed in procurement, especially in a male-dominated field?
Reject the notion of dominance and focus on establishing your boundaries. Seek mentors and allies across genders and approach challenges as opportunities for collaboration and change. Remember, "no" is a valid response, and facing problems as chances to partner with others rather than obstacles can lead to meaningful progress and fulfillment.
Where do you see the future of procurement heading, and what skills are essential for future leaders?
The future of procurement is exciting and undefined, presenting opportunities to innovate in supplier diversity, sustainability, and business partnership. Embracing AI and technology, understanding the continuous journey of sustainability, and fostering inclusive supplier relationships are crucial. Leaders must navigate these changes with openness to friction and change, ready to leverage every opportunity for growth.
Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?
I find joy in work and seek balance through home improvement projects, engaging with nature and spending quality time with loved ones, especially my favorite set of twins. These activities offer me a chance to problem-solve, learn, and experience the world from new perspectives, enriching my personal and professional life.
In honor of Women's History Month, who are the women who have inspired you the most?
My sister Natalie, whose relationship provided me with profound personal growth and understanding, and Maya Angelou, whose multifaceted legacy as a writer, artist, and powerful voice for authenticity and resilience, have profoundly impacted my life. Both exemplify the importance of living authentically, generously, and courageously.
