Key Learnings for Procurement Leaders and Personal Growth

As we close out 2023, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the lessons learned over the past year and how they can shape our approach for 2024. At Wonder Services, we’ve seen significant shifts in procurement, as well as in personal development, that are worth noting as we move forward. Here’s a look at three major insights in procurement and three personal development reflections from 2023, along with how we can leverage these learnings for the year ahead.

Procurement Insights from 2023

1. The Expanding Role of Procurement: More Value, More Challenges

In 2023, procurement was tasked with more responsibilities than ever before. As my good friend Anders from Focal Point mentioned, the role of procurement has evolved dramatically over the years. Initially, we were asked to save money. By the mid-2000s, the focus expanded to managing risks, and now, procurement is expected to play a role in saving the world through ESG initiatives, diversity, and sustainability efforts.

While this expanded role highlights the increasing value of procurement, it also brings challenges. Many procurement professionals are feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, and stretched thin, often being asked to do more with fewer resources. As leaders, it’s crucial to reimagine procurement teams and processes for 2024. We must ensure that our teams are supported, mentally well, and equipped with the necessary skills and technology to meet these growing demands.

2. The AI Revolution: Hype or Reality?

2023 was undoubtedly the year of AI in procurement. The conversation around artificial intelligence has been polarized, with some viewing it as overhyped and others embracing it as a transformative tool. At Wonder Services, we’ve integrated AI into our operations and have seen its potential to streamline tasks, generate creative ideas, and even develop our company’s tagline.

For those still hesitant, we recommend starting small. Identify a few simple use cases for AI within your processes and explore its capabilities. This gradual approach can help ease concerns, allowing teams to adapt to AI without overwhelming them. As AI technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, it’s essential to stay informed and experiment with how it can enhance procurement practices.

3. The Power of Community in Procurement

One of the most significant takeaways from 2023 is the value of community within the procurement profession. The challenges of recent years have brought us closer, fostering a supportive environment where professionals can learn from one another and accelerate their knowledge. In a fast-paced industry like procurement, no one has time to learn everything on their own, making community engagement essential.

Being part of a community allows you to tap into collective wisdom, gain insights from others’ experiences, and avoid common pitfalls. If you’re not already involved in a procurement community, now is the time to join. Whether through LinkedIn, professional networks, or specialized groups, engaging with your peers will be critical to navigating the complexities of 2024 and beyond.

Personal Development Reflections from 2023

1. Prioritizing Self-Development

This year, I realized the importance of self-development in driving creativity and innovation. Mid-year, I found myself feeling drained and lacking inspiration. It wasn’t until I took time off and dedicated Monday afternoons to personal growth—through reading, training, and connecting with others—that I regained my creative spark.

As we head into 2024, I encourage you to make self-development a priority. Whether it’s setting aside time each week for learning or adopting a more structured approach to your personal growth, investing in yourself will pay dividends in your ability to lead and innovate.

2. Embracing an Abundance Mindset

Another powerful lesson from 2023 was the shift from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance. This change in perspective can transform how we approach negotiations, team dynamics, and career growth. By focusing on how everyone can win together, rather than viewing situations as zero-sum games, we open ourselves to new opportunities and collaborations.

As you plan for 2024, consider how adopting an abundance mindset can help you achieve your goals. Whether in negotiations, career advancement, or team management, this shift can lead to more positive outcomes and a greater sense of fulfillment.

3. Cultivating Resilience

Finally, 2023 underscored the importance of resilience in the face of challenges. Procurement professionals have shown incredible strength and adaptability, continually stepping up to meet new demands. Resilience is the foundation of success, allowing us to push through difficulties and emerge stronger.

As we prepare for 2024, let’s carry forward the resilience we’ve built this year. By staying focused, supporting each other, and remaining adaptable, we can continue to thrive despite the obstacles we may face.
